The chronically ill or disabled don’t choose to be housebound or bedbound—but sometimes, there’s just nowhere else to go.

Hi, I’m Helen. I’ve been chronically ill for five years, and honestly, I’d still be shut away at home if it weren’t for the powered wheelchair I hire and, most importantly, the place that gives me hope: Incurably Wonderful.

I live with ME/CFS (Chronic Fatigue), Fibromyalgia, and PTSD. I want to raise money so others like me—who are stuck in bed or at home—can find their own “happy place,” just like I did.

Incurably Wonderful is a truly special Liverpool organisation founded by Rocio Castillero. It supports adults with chronic illness and disabilities to transform their lives through skills, knowledge, and resources. But the magic is in the people: the events and activities are designed by and for people who truly understand what it’s like to live with chronic conditions. Whether it’s social gatherings, gentle movement classes, or learning workshops, everything is made with patients in mind.

I’m lucky—I’m adventurous in my wheelchair, and most weeks I travel from Eastham to Liverpool by train or bus to join in. It’s taken me five years to get to this point, and Incurably Wonderful has been a game changer for me this past year.

But not everyone is so lucky. This small but mighty community interest company is trying to support the whole of Merseyside, and there are so many people who just can’t get to the activities. I want to raise money to help Incurably Wonderful get more people from bed to door.

Incurably Wonderful already does amazing things—from online activities to encourage people to connect (that’s how I started), to helping patients take their first steps out into the world. But they simply can’t afford to get everyone to their door.

That’s where we come in.

With your help, we could make those impossible journeys possible. With our donations they can continue their vital work and hopefully expand to provide a transport solution for those who can't get to them.

You might wonder: can’t people just get a taxi or a bus? The short answer is, for many, no. There are so many reasons why standard transport doesn’t work for everyone. Did you know, for example, that the Merseyside minibus service for disabled people can only be used a few times a month?

I’m not just asking for money—I want a challenge too. I want to do something positive and show everyone that, even with chronic fatigue, I still have plenty to give my community.

My days of running marathons are over (not that I ever actually ran one!), so there’ll be no couch-to-5k for me. But what can I do?

I’ve been wheelchair-bound for 18 months and was housebound before that. I’ve struggled to get around on public transport for over five years, ever since I had to take long breaks from driving. But I’m determined to show what’s possible with the right equipment and support.

So, I’m going to use my powered wheelchair to complete a journey around the entire outside of Merseyside! I’ll be using cycle routes, public rights of way, green spaces, and dropped pavements. I’ll be sharing my journey as I go—using public transport to get to my starting point each day, then aiming to cover 4–10 miles a day depending on my energy levels and my wheelchair battery. I will repeat the process until I’m done. It's going to take me a long time as I will need breaks between my wheelchair days to manage my own illness. I plan to attempt to complete the challenge by the 1st of July 2026 - 1 year from now! I won't always be alone, I will have support from others to keep me on track as no one can do everything alone.

You might think that doesn’t sound like much of a challenge, but that’s the point. For someone with chronic fatigue, every day is a marathon. My wheelchair only has so much power before I break down, and I have only a tiny amount of energy to spare.

I’m hoping my journey will show just how hard it is to get around on very little energy, and highlight the tough choices people with ME face every day: do I go out today, or do I save my energy for tomorrow?

Can you help spur me on in my Mission Around Merseyside by donating to Incurably Wonderful?

Let’s get more patients from their beds to Incurably Wonderful’s front door.

Thank you for reading my story and for believing in a world where everyone is incurably wonderful.

Video update from Helen 2 days after being out on her wheelchair

      Transcript:

“Good morning, um we are 2 days after I did my walk. Somewhere, where was I?  New Brighton to Meols and the post exertion malaise, which is a symptom of chronic fatigue, has really hit. um. I am struggling to keep my eyes open. I have a headache which is slightly sensitive [meant light sensitive] and yeah, I think its going to be a day in bed today. Just wanted to pop on to show how difficult being able to be out on the wheelchair can be, thanks to everyone whose donated so far, see you in a couple of days, thank you.”
